Honda Shuffling U.S.-Canada Production To Save Jobs

Honda is moving some of its CR-V production out of the U.S., but the decision actually saves jobs. Instead of initiating layoffs, Honda will shift production of export-bound CR-Vs into Canada, but in return, the automaker’s U.S. factory will receive some of the volume produced north of the border.

A Honda statement said, “A portion of the CR-V production currently produced in Canada for the U.S. market will be transferred to the East Liberty Plant in the United States, which already produces the CR-V. At the same time, approximately the same volume of non-U.S. bound CR-V production will be shifted from ELP to the Canadian plant. From the perspective of production allocation by destination, there are some minor adjustments, but this does not mean that production is being shifted from Canada to the United States.”

We don’t know how many vehicles the change will impact, but Honda has announced a postponement of planned investments in Canada due to tariffs. The automaker had planned to build up to a quarter-million cars annually in Canada, which could have created 1,000 additional jobs in the country, but the project is on hold for at least the next two years.

Honda may move the production of other vehicles as time goes on. It built more than 200,000 Civics at its factory in Allston, Ontario, and it builds engines in another facility north of Toronto.
