Volvo Revives the XC70 As An SUV for China

Volvo discontinued the XC70 after the 2016 model year, ending a long run for the beefy off-road-oriented wagon. The automaker is reportedly considering bringing it back, however, it won’t be the long-roof car we all remember. If Volvo revives the XC70, it will likely arrive in China as yet another electrified SUV.

The new vehicle is expected to be Volvo’s first range-extended PHEV, with an initial electric range of 124 miles and a gas engine generator that helps provide up to 500 miles of total range. That said, the automaker hasn’t elaborated on its definition of “range-extended,” so Volvo could be talking about a larger battery or other configuration, though the most obvious answer here is the most likely.

Volvo teased the new SUV with a few artfully-shaded images, but the overall design is pretty easy to see. It’s fairly closely aligned with the automaker’s other recent releases and comes with Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights and unique upright taillight design.

We’re unlikely to see this vehicle in the States anytime soon, especially given the current trade environment. The powertrain was developed in partnership between Geely and Renault, and the vehicle will be built in China, so it’s forbidden fruit out of the gate. That said, Volvo does have a U.S. manufacturing footprint where it will make the EX90, so anything is possible.
